Moissanite as a mineral was discovered by Henri Moissan, in 1893 in a rock samples from a meteor crater in Canyon Diablo, Arizona. At first, he mistakenly took the crystals as diamonds, but in 1904 he identified the crystals as silicon carbide. Artificial silicon carbide had been first synthesized in the lab in 1902.
