Gem Diamonds Retrieves 123ct. Rough from Letšeng

Gem Diamonds found an 123.20-carat diamond from the Letšeng mine in Lesotho, which is the eighth 100-carat stone this year.

The company stated on Tuesday that this high-quality type II diamond was found on June 29. It comes after last month’s find of a 172.06-carat rough diamond and a stone of 212.49 carats in May; two type IIa diamonds weighing 169.15 and 118.74 carats were also recovered by the firm in April, while January saw the discovery of a high-value white diamond weighing 295 carats.

Historically Letšeng has been known for producing large stones, but had seen fewer such finds recently before this year.

Last year saw the highest production at Letšeng since Gem Diamonds took over: 16 stones over 100 carats were recovered, compared to six in both 2021 and 2019, four in both 2023 and 2022 and just one in each of the three preceding years.
