Sotheby’s sells “The Pink Star” diamond, News 5

Sunday, January 26, 2014

SPANISH-It was only expected to fetch $60 million, but when the gavel came down at Sotheby’s auction in Geneva, the buyer paid just over $83 million. Sotheby’s reports that the price paid for this remarkable diamond is the highest price anyone has ever paid for a gem at auction.

The diamond is an oval cut, flawless, fancy vivid, 59.6 carat pink diamond. It took diamond cutters two years to cut it free from a rough diamond weighing 132.5 carats. At auction, it was toted to bidder as one of the most remarkable gems to ever appear at auction. “The Pink Diamond” is said to be the largest internally flawless diamond the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has ever graded.
